Household Budget Workshop

Household Budget Workshop

Budgeting for a household is more complicated than budgeting solo. You might be managing two incomes with different pay schedules, splitting costs with a partner who has different spending habits, or covering childcare and groceries on a timeline that does not match your bills. This workshop addresses those real-world complications directly.

Who this workshop is for

It works well for couples setting up shared finances for the first time, families looking to reduce financial friction, and single-income households where every dollar needs a clear job. The format is small-group - no more than eight participants - so there is room for questions and discussion.

Tools covered in the session

We walk through three budgeting methods: zero-based budgeting, the envelope system adapted for digital banking, and a simplified percentage-based approach. You will leave with a template for whichever method fits your situation, along with a guide for tracking shared expenses when two people are involved.

The workshop runs for three hours with a short break. It is held online via a shared video platform, and all materials are sent to you the day before. A recording is available for 14 days after the session in case you need to revisit any section.

  • Three budgeting methods explained with examples
  • Shared expense tracking for couples and households
  • Variable income strategies for freelancers and shift workers
  • Downloadable templates included
This workshop is educational. It does not constitute regulated financial planning or tax advice.

[Programme] - What this covers

  1. Part 1 - How Household Budgets Break Down

We look at the most common reasons household budgets fail - not lack of willpower, but structural problems like misaligned pay dates, uncategorized spending, and no plan for shared discretionary costs.

  2. Part 2 - Choosing a Method That Fits

A walkthrough of zero-based budgeting, the adapted envelope method, and percentage-based allocation. Each is demonstrated with a sample household scenario so you can see how the numbers actually work.

  3. Part 3 - Building Your Own Draft Budget

Guided exercise where each participant fills in their own budget template using the method they selected. Facilitator available for questions throughout. Partners attending together can work on a shared version.

  4. Part 4 - Maintaining the Budget Month to Month

Practical strategies for reviewing your budget at the end of each month, handling overspending in one category without abandoning the whole plan, and adjusting for months with irregular income or large one-time costs.

What to bring to the workshop

A rough sense of your monthly income and your main expense categories. You do not need exact numbers - estimates are fine for the in-session exercise. A more precise version can be built after the workshop using the templates provided.
